MHB wins second contract to build Dutch offshore substation

Malaysia Marine and Heavy Engineering Holdings Berhad (MHB) has been awarded a subcontract by Petrofac to build the Nederwiek 1 high-voltage direct-current (HVDC) offshore substation platform.

Nederwiek 1, which forms part of Tennet’s 2GW programme for the Netherlands, comprises a 30,000-tonne topside and a 10,000t jacket.

MHB is responsible for the construction engineering, fabrication, mechanical completion, load out and sea fastening, and for architectural works on an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) basis.

The duration of the project is approximately 36 months, with fabrication to begin in 2025 and complete by 2028.

This is MHB’s second engagement in the Dutch offshore wind market, after securing a contract from Petrofac last November for the IJmuiden Ver Alpha platform. The two companies may collaborate on another possible offshore substation of a similar size.

Mohd Nazir Mohd Nor, managing director and chief executive officer of MHB, said the contract was a “crucial milestone” for his company.
