Japan’s Sumitomo Electric has started construction work on its new subsea cable factory at the Port of Nigg in Scotland.
Scheduled for completion in 2026, the facility will supply critical elements for the reinforcement of the UK electricity transmission network and for connecting renewable energy plants to the grid.
Sumitomo and its cable installation partner Van Oord have also been selected as preferred bidders for the Shetland 2 525kV high-voltage direct-current (HVDC) subsea cable project, Scottish transmission network operator SSEN Transmission has announced.
Shetland 2 is the ‘anchor project’ for the new factory. The 330km line will connect the Shetland islands and the mainland to bring 2GW of renewable electricity to the UK’s network.
Sumitomo’s £350 million ($446 million) factory is backed with £24.5 million of public sector funding announced by the devolved Scottish government.
