Norwegian wind farm to resume operations after Siemens Gamesa turbine blade breakage

Operations at the Odal Vind project in Norway are set to restart in July after they were suspended when a blade broke off one of its Siemens Gamesa turbines.

Turbines at the 163MW project were shut down when a blade broke off a Siemens Gamesa 4.X turbine on 10 April.

The operator Odalvindkraftwerk expects to have 16 of the wind farm’s 34 turbines turning again at the start of July after “extensive external and internal examinations” of all the wind turbines were carried out.

Despite completing these investigations, no “final conclusion” on the cause of the breakage has been discovered, the company stated.

The wind farm is co-owned by Norwegian power firm Akershus Energi (51%), renewables developer Cloudberry (33.4%) and pension fund KLP (15.6%).

Siemens Gamesa has faced quality control issues related to components in its 4.X and 5.X onshore wind turbines. These contributed to substantial financial losses and the suspension of onshore wind turbine sales.

Full operations at Odal Vind are expected to resume again by the end of the year.
