In a manifesto targeting members of the European Parliament (EP) who will take their seats after an election in early June, the coalition of renewable hydrogen companies, investors and innovators said hydrogen would bring “Europe’s vast wind and solar potential everywhere” and help tackle hard-to-decarbonise sectors.
But the RHC warned that “time is running out”, with renewable hydrogen facing competition from fossil fuel-derived alternatives. It said that “urgent and bold action is imperative”.
Among five actions it wants the EP to support is a rollout of electricity and hydrogen infrastructure that will connect supply centres with demand hubs such as the fertiliser and chemical sectors.
The coalition said that sizing the infrastructure to maximise the renewables-based electrification of society “will ensure the most cost-effective and energy-efficient energy system integration”.
It also called for a rebalancing of costs, arguing that producing renewable hydrogen is still more expensive than its fossil alternatives due to the real price of carbon not being fully reflected in the market, and to “high charges and levies on renewable electricity”.
Other actions sought by the RHC include establishing “ambitious binding 2040 targets for the deployment of renewables including renewable hydrogen”.
The coalition wants renewable hydrogen prioritised in all legislation, as well as EU funding to be used to “massively scale up renewable hydrogen production and related value chains in Europe”.
Finally, it wants a strong EU industrial policy to support electrolyser manufacturing in Europe.
Without these actions, the group warns that “Europe risks losing the race for future-proof jobs, industries and cleantech”.
