Australian utility to buy battery-backed 1.5GW wind farm

Australian utility Origin Energy has agreed to acquire Virya Energy’s Yanco Delta project, which is due to consist of a 1.5GW wind farm coupled with 800MWh of battery storage.

Yanco Delta is planned for a site in New South Wales close to existing transmission infrastructure. It has been approved by the state and federal governments.

Origin will initially pay A$125 million (US$80 million) for the project, and then up to A$175 million “conditional on the project achieving certain development milestones”.

It intends to buy all, or most of, the wind farm’s output.
