US approves Avangrid’s near-2GW New England offshore wind array

The Biden administration has given final environmental approval to a near-2GW offshore wind array Avangrid is planning off the coast of New England.

The US Interior Department issued a record of decision for Avangrid’s 791MW New England Wind and 1080MW New England Wind 2 projects today (2 April).

This enables Avangrid to begin onshore construction and outlines what it must do to mitigate environmental impacts.

Avangrid recently bid for power deals for the two projects in the Massachusetts-Connecticut-Rhode Island offshore wind tender that closed last week. It had previously terminated power deals for the two projects after facing a series of financial pressures.

Counted as one project, the New England Wind array – formerly known as Park City and Commonwealth Wind – is the eighth offshore wind farm approved by President Joe Biden's Interior Department. Biden has a goal of 30GW of offshore wind capacity online by 2030.

Avangrid expects to have the project’s construction and operations plan approved in June, which would enable it to proceed with full construction.
