Moldova will auction up to 105MW of wind energy in June this year, according to Carolina Novac, secretary of state in the country's energy ministry.
In comments made at WindEurope’s 2024 conference in Bilbao, Spain, Novac said the previously announced auction will likely be ready in June as the country seeks to develop its energy independence by boosting renewables.
“I’m pleased to announce we are developing renewables auctions. For wind we have 105MW of allocated capacity. We are developing the tender documentation. We should have the procedure open to offers in June,” she told conference attendees.
Moldova previously revealed intentions to launch its first wind and solar auction in 2024.
Novac described the two years since war broke out between Russia and Ukraine had on energy in the small eastern European country. Moldova is located between Ukraine and Romania.
She said that renewables including wind would help the country improve energy security.
“For my country in the past two years it was quite a rollercoaster, with gas shortages up to 60%, and with electricity shortages. As of December 2022 we have stopped any imports from [Russian state fossil fuel firm] Gazprom to Movolda. We have no gas, no coal. It is obvious for us that the solution is renewables and in any crisis there lies an opportunities. In one year, we managed to double our capacity for renewables,” she said.
The country currently has no operating wind power capacity, according to “uåX˜äŠÊ˜·³Ç Intelligence, the research and data division of “uåX˜äŠÊ˜·³Ç.
