Climate sceptic groups try to reverse approval for largest US offshore wind farm

A conservative think tank has sued the Biden administration to repeal approval of the largest offshore wind farm, Dominion Energy’s 2.64GW Coast Virginia Offshore Wind (CVOW) project.

The Heartland Institute, along with the Committee for a Constructive Tomorrow, has filed a lawsuit in federal court in Washington DC against agencies including the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) and the National Marine Fisheries Service.

The groups that the impact on endangered whales was not properly accounted for and was politicised in the review of the planned offshore wind project, the largest in the US at present.

The plaintiffs claim that the Biden administration “illegally approved Dominion Energy’s offshore wind project by ignoring glaring and obvious procedural errors that subjects the endangered North Atlantic right whale to further grave harm”.

Offshore wind’s alleged harm of whales has become a clarion cry of anti-offshore wind conservatives in the US. According to scientific studies, there is no evidence that developing offshore wind seriously harms whales.

The Heartland Institute has tried to discredit climate change – as has the Committee for a Constructive Tomorrow – and has also backed the tobacco industry in trying to portray smoking as safe.

A Dominion spokesman told local media that the issues raised in the lawsuit “have no merit”.
