ZF set for serial production of wind turbine drivetrains and gearboxes

ZF Wind Power is close to completing the conversion of its Belgian plant into a serial production hub for European wind markets. When done, the plant at Lommel will have three serial production lines in total: one for Shift gearboxes and one each for offshore and onshore drivetrains.

We can now manufacture innovative powertrain models for offshore turbines that can produce up to 80GWh/year,“ said Felix Henseler, chief executive of ZF Wind Power. With serial production of the onshore powertrain, ZF said it can deliver four powertrain variants for these turbines with a power output of up to 7.2MW.

In addition, the modular gearbox design allows ZF to combine its Shift gearbox platform assembly and testing capabilities to meet current and future market demands. The team can optimise the operations for a tact-driven, just-in-time supply chain”, the firm said.

ZF said it is currently finalising the last stages of the powertrain production lines. “When all lines are up and running, we will be able to produce a mix of four products on a daily basis. On a yearly basis, that will be the equivalent of energy for 4 million households,” a spokesperson told “uåX˜äŠÊ˜·³Ç.
