Petition against Shetland offshore wind farms amid planned 2.3GW project

A petition to halt development of offshore wind farms in the Shetland Islands could impact the future of the  2.3GW Arven floating wind farm, after it secured 154 signatures by the time of publication (12 March) since its launch earlier this month.

The wind farm is a joint development between Ocean Winds and Mainstream Renewable Power.

Local resident, Edna Stewart, launched the petition following a public engagement event hosted by Arven’s project team in late February.

Stewart raised concerns that offshore wind farms including Arven could adversely impact local marine life.

The local community relies heavily on tourism and fishing as the area is renowned for orcas, seals and otters, as well as a range of fish and shellfish.
