'Significant day' as Ireland's largest onshore wind project officially opened

ESB and Bord na Móna have officially opened Ireland’s largest onshore wind farm, the 192MW Oweninny.

Located in County Mayo and delivered in two phases, the 50:50 joint venture entailed a total investment of €320 million.

The 29-turbine phase one was installed in 2019, while the 31-turbine phase two was completed and brought into commercial operation in late 2023.

The development adjoins Ireland's first commercial wind farm, Bord na Móna’s Bellacorrick, which was built in 1992 and remains operational.

Tom Donnellan, chief executive, Bord na Móna, said: “We are delighted to launch our joint venture with ESB and officially conclude the second phase of Ireland’s largest wind farm.

Eamon Ryan, minister for the environment, described the opening as “a significant day for Ireland, and for Mayo”.
