Finnish plant on track to deliver green hydrogen in late 2024

Finland’s first industrial-scale electrolysis plant is on schedule to start hydrogen production in the second half of 2024, using wind energy to make up to 400kg of green hydrogen per hour.

German electrolyser company Sunfire completed the installation of its 20MW pressurised alkaline electrolyser at Harjavalta, south-west Finland, in January, one year after the project broke ground.

Project developer P2X Solutions believes the plant will “set a milestone for the ramp-up of the green hydrogen market in Finland”.

In November last year, P2X Solutions signed an offtake agreement with Danisco Sweeteners, a subsidiary of US-based International Flavors & Fragrances. Danisco will use green hydrogen at its plant in Kotka, some 300km east of the Harjavalta electrolyser, to reduce CO2 emissions from xylitol production.

The green hydrogen will be used for various other applications in the chemical industry. Sunfire has engineered the pressurised alkaline plant to work with a methanation unit from Finnish Q Power, allowing it to produce synthetic methane from carbon dioxide and green hydrogen.

With installation of the pressurised alkaline electrolyser completed, preparations are under way to commission the plant in the coming months. First production is expected in the second half of the year.

“Green hydrogen will play a crucial role in the transformation of the chemical sector. We feel privileged to be part of this pioneering project with P2X Solutions, where our pressurised alkaline electrolyser will be operated on an industrial scale,” said Sunfire chief executive Nils Aldag.

Finland’s economic affairs and employment ministry and the Finnish Climate Fund have jointly provided €36 million in funding for the project, while P2X Solutions is planning a total investment of about €70 million.
