US utility looks to tap ‘excellent resources’ with 400MW wind search

US utility Minnesota Power has issued a request for proposals (RfP) for up to 400MW of wind capacity to come online by the end of 2027.

It stated that it is seeking “cost-effective” wind resources with direct interconnections to the transmission system and the ability to enter commercial production in 2026 or 2027 as part of its EnergyForward strategy.

The utility, a division of Allete, is in the upper US midwest.

The purchase of wind through this RFP is due to increase Minnesota Power’s wind portfolio of about 870 MW of owned and contracted capacity by nearly 50%. It will also help the company and state meet carbon-free goals, the utility added.

Minnesota Power currently delivers more than 50% renewable energy to its 150,000 retail customers.

The utility’s chief operating officer, Josh Skelton, said: “New wind generation in the upper midwest can tap into an excellent wind resource and maximise use of regional transmission assets to deliver renewable energy to our customers and fits well with our portfolio of other energy supply resources to reliably meet customer demands around the clock.”
