Amazon signs power deal for repowered Avangrid wind farm

Technology giant Amazon has signed a deal to buy all of the output from a soon-to-be repowered wind farm in Oregon.

It will buy the power from Iberdrola subsidiary Avangrid’s Leaning Juniper IIA project in Gilliam county, which has been online since 2010. It will have a capacity of 98.4MW once it is repowered.

The project currently consists of 42 of Suzlon’s S88-2.1MW turbines. These will be replaced with 40 of GE Vernova’s 2.5MW turbines, with Avangrid planning to reinforce the existing project’s foundations and retain its towers.

All of the existing turbines' blades will be recycled after they are decommissioned.

The US is set for a repowering boom with the landmark Inflation Reduction Act offering tax credits for repowered projects.

Avangrid CEO Pedro Azagra described this as a “tremendous opportunity”, and added: “Avangrid’s large existing onshore wind fleet will enable many more repowerings like this one over the next decade.

“In doing so, we take advantage of improving technologies to generate more renewable power more efficiently and extend the positive impact these projects deliver locally.”
