GE Vernova to supply turbines for onshore wind farm in Japan

Turbine manufacturer GE Vernova is due to supply typhoon-proof wind turbines to a 90MW wind farm planned in Fukushima prefecture in the east of Japan's main island of Honshu.

It signed a deal to supply and install 28 of its GE 3.2-103 wind turbines at the planned 90MW Abukuma South project, which is planned for a site near Iwaki-city and Hirono-town. It will also service them after commissioning.

GE Vernova claimed that the 3.2-103 turbines are suited to Japan’s unique weather conditions, which can include typhoon-strength winds.

The wind farm is being developed by Abukuma South Wind Power – a joint venture of Japanese wind specialist Cosmo Eco Power, construction firm Nemoto Tsusho, packing company Maruto and Japanese utility Tohoku Electric Power.

GE Vernova added that the wind farm would help meet the Fukushima prefecture’s target of meeting 100% of its energy demand from renewables by 2040.
