Invenergy acquires 3.6GW New Jersey offshore wind transmission project

Invenergy has announced the formation of Jersey Link, a high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission initiative the company said will connect up to 3.6GW of new offshore wind to the New Jersey grid.

The Chicago-based power company acquired the early-stage project, previously known as Atlantic Power Transmission, from Blackstone Infrastructure Partners, which will continue to be involved in developing it.

The state of New Jersey is targeting 11GW of offshore wind by 2040. Invenergy is the lead developer of Leading Light Wind - a 2.4GW offshore wind project bid into New Jersey’s third offshore tender round and which is being developed with New York company energyRE.

Invenergy is currently developing over one-third of proposed HVDC transmission capacity in the United States. This includes the 5GW 800-mile Grain Belt Express, the highest capacity transmission line in the US that will provide reliable power to the Midwest and other regions.

Invenergy said New Jersey’s decision, last April, to hold an offshore wind transmission competitive tender for 3.5GW will help “address the limitations associated with offshore projects building individual transmission lines”.

This approach aligns with the US Department of Energy’s National Transmission Needs Study, which was released in October.
