Ørsted wins key approval for 1.6GW South Korean offshore wind farm

Ørsted has secured an electricity business licence that grants the Danish renewables major the exclusive development rights for its planned 1.6GW offshore wind farm off Incheon City, South Korea.

It plans to build the 1600MW Incheon project – which it claims will be South Korea’s largest offshore wind farm when completed in the early 2030s – 70km off the country’s north-west. It plans to build the project in two phases.

Having secured the electricity business licence from Korea’s ministry of trade, industry and energy, Ørsted now needs to carry out environmental impact assessments and site investigations and then secure an offtake agreement for the project.

Ørsted’s senior vice president and president of the Asia Pacific region, Per Mejnert Kristensen, said the renewables major has a “strong track record” of working with Korean suppliers in projects elsewhere in the world.

Ørsted claims its project off Incheon may be South Korea’s largest offshore wind farm when it is completed. However, the government has also backed plans for a much larger 8.2GW project in Korean waters.
