Vestas announced the move on Tuesday (28 November) and said it would improve efficiency at the company.
Utopus Insights was founded in 2017 and bought by Vestas a year later for around €80 million ($100 million). It specialises in energy-related data analytics through software called ‘Scipher’, which uses data modelling to forecast wind and solar patterns and which has been integrated into operational Vestas turbines.
“The Scipher platform from Utopus Insights holds great potential for Vestas. In our internal operations, it will enable [us] to further strengthen our core business and drive efficiency,” said Christian Venderby, executive vice president of service at Vestas who also chairs the board at Utopus Insights.
“This will make our approach to servicing wind projects more effective for our customers, as well as support increased profitability in our business,” he added.
Vestas said it aimed to “expand” the company’s digital approach to asset management and strengthen its forecasting capabilities through the merger.
The company claims that “more direct access” to the Scipher platform will accelerate what the software is capable of and in turn help spur digital integration across the wider wind industry.
