New Jersey ‘rejects wind misinformation' in state election

Republicans failed to win a majority in the New Jersey state legislature in the 7 November national US elections. They had hoped to do so, for the first time in more than 20 years, in part because of high-profile Republican-backed local resistance to the state’s offshore wind projects.

Additionally, Ørsted had scrapped more than 2.2GW of offshore wind projects off New Jersey shortly before the vote, an embarrassment for the state’s governor, Democrat Phil Murphy, perhaps the most pro-wind US state leader.

“In a year where misinformation and coordinated attacks on offshore wind dominated the news, this is a victory for New Jerseyans and their economic and clean energy future,” said the American Clean Power Association’s director of eastern state affairs, Moira Cyphers.

“Impressive turnout for candidates who support offshore wind development tells us what we already knew: the majority of New Jersey voters favour offshore wind development,” she added.
