Lhyfe and Exogen sign MoU to open new markets for green hydrogen

Lhyfe and Exogen Hydrogen Solutions have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to grow the market for green and renewable hydrogen in industrial steam, district heating and mobility applications.

The two companies view industrial steam as “a large new end-market”, and in transport a “completely new market segment” for green and renewable hydrogen.

Philippe Desorme, vice president of sales and business development at Lhyfe, said green hydrogen had become highly relevant for decarbonising industrial steam, district heating and logistics.

“By partnering with Exogen, we expect a significant expansion of our green hydrogen production output over time, while also opening a completely new market segment for us,” Desorme said.

Lhyfe claimed a world-first in 2021 with an industrial-scale green hydrogen production plant interconnected with a wind farm. The company aims to achieve 55MW of installed hydrogen production capacity by the end of 2024, 200MW by the end of 2026 and more than 3GW by the end of 2030.

Exogen offers a hydrogen steam plant that can be delivered in a container. According to Exogen, once green hydrogen is available onsite and in industrial quantities, combined applications can unlock operating synergies and cost savings.

The MoU comes as more wind farms and other renewable energy projects are linked to industrial and commercial companies or underwritten by corporate power purchase agreements, which could include onsite electrolysis.

The two companies highlighted the potential for “vast” demand from multinationals and industrial clusters using green hydrogen to meet their needs for mobility – such as forklifts, vans and trucks – and heat, such as industrial steam and district heating.

The partnership includes a commercial agreement to identify potential customers across Europe.
