NKT to supply export power cables for Baltic Power offshore wind project

NKT has won a contract to supply power cables for the 76-turbine, 1.2GW Baltic Power offshore wind project, being developed by a joint venture between PKN Orlen and Northland Power off the Polish coast.

The contract is worth more than €120 million, according to NKT. It is for the supply of a 230kV high-voltage alternating-current (HVAC) cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) power cable system in four circuits of around 32km, comprising a total length of approximately 130km.

“The project is an important step in the Polish transition to renewable energy, and we are pleased to leverage our experience to support the development of the offshore wind sector in Poland,” said Lukas Sidler, executive vice president and head of HV Solutions in Cologne, Germany, where NKT will manufacture the offshore power cables.

Baltic Power is due to be fully commissioned by 2026. Poland is aiming for 11GW of offshore wind in the Baltic Sea by 2040.
