Germany scraps funding for Bosnian wind farm over 'secession fears'

Germany has scrapped financial support for a wind farm in Bosnia and Herzegovina due to the secessionist policy of the country’s autonomous Serbian government assembly, Republika Srpska (RS).

The German economics cooperation and development ministry was due to cover 93% of the costs of state utility Elektroprivreda RS’s 48MW Hrgud wind farm.

However, it has now withdrawn a planned €60 million loan – which was due to make up the bulk of its contribution to the project's funding, alongside an €800,000 grant. It has also scrapped plans to fund two hydropower plants in the region along with an upgrade to its sewage system.

Germany’s foreign office told “uåX˜äŠÊ˜·³Ç: “The reason is the continued secession policy of the Republika Srpska and its president, Milorad Dodik.”

The 7% of funding not provided by Germany was due to come from project developer Elektroprivreda RS.

It is unclear how the withdrawal of the loan will impact the wind farm.

“uåX˜äŠÊ˜·³Ç has contacted the utility for comment.

Bosnia and Herzegovina comprises two autonomous regions, the Republika Srpska (Serb Republic) and the Bosniak-Croat Federation.

The separatist Serb Republic has made several movements towards secession in recent months, including suspending rulings by Bosnia’s constitutional court.
