Spanish utility Iberdrola has bought a 50MW Polish onshore wind portfolio being developed by renewables firm Augusta Energy.
The company finalised a deal to buy the Podlasek and Wólka Dobryńska onshore wind farms currently being built in north-eastern Poland from Augusta Energy, a Polish company owned 50% by Polish renewables firm Greenvolt Power and 50% by German asset manager K-Gal.
Telecommunications major T-Mobile has agreed to buy electricity from the two wind farms through a 15-year contract indexed to inflation.
Meanwhile, French utility Engie has bought a 100MW-plus Polish onshore wind portfolio from renewables developer RP Global and investment firm Marguerite.
The deal is for the 50MW Tychowo and 54MW Kukinia projects in West Pomerania in north-west Poland. The projects were commissioned in 2009 and 2013 respectively.
Poland is heavily reliant on fossil fuels with coal alone accounting for 71% of its energy mix. However, the country is looking to build out renewables amid the wider European energy transition and recently passed reforms to reduce the so-called setback distance for onshore wind projects – though industry groups the move does not go far enough.
Iberdrola aims to have 1GW of installed wind and solar PV capacity in Poland by 2030. The Spanish utility purchased the 82.5MW Korytnica 1 and 30MW Zopowy onshore wind farms in Poland in 2021, and currently has a total of 212.8MW of installed capacity in the country, it claimed.
