Preferred bidders announced for Scottish subsea HVDC links

SSEN Transmission has earmarked Hitachi, NKT, Sumitomo and Van Oord to supply HVDC infrastructure to connect offshore wind in Scotland.

SSEN Transmission has selected Hitachi Energy as preferred bidder for the HVDC converter system and NKT for the 525kV high-voltage direct current (HVDC) cable for its Western Isles and Spittal-Peterhead subsea links in Scotland, which will enable the transmission of wind power to the south of the country.

Hitachi said the projects are two of the five 2GW HVDC systems it will supply to SSEN Transmission under its framework agreement. The three additional projects are flexible in location, and to be defined as large-scale studies are finalised, it added.

SSEN Transmission also announced that, along with NKT, Sumitomo Electric and its offshore installation partner Van Oord Offshore Wind UK have also successfully joined SSEN Transmission’s framework of contractors for future HVDC Cables.

The Western Isles and Spittal-Peterhead HVDC links are part of a major upgrade of the electricity transmission network to connect and transport ScotWind’s full ambition of around 28GW of offshore wind.

Under current network development plans around 11GW of ScotWind’s full potential will be enabled, SSEN Transmission said.
