Iberdrola has delivered first power from its 496MW Saint-Brieuc wind farm off the coast of Brittany to France’s national grid.
Since it was successful at auction in 2012, Saint-Brieuc has faced opposition from the fishing industry, environmental groups and local politicians, who have claimed it would damage the ecosystem and lead to job losses.
France’s highest administrative court rejected an appeal against the project in 2020, paving the way for construction to start.
Construction has since been beset by protests from the fishing industry and an oil leak from a jack-up vessel.
Saint-Brieuc will eventually consist of 62 of Siemens Gamesa’s SG 8.0-167 DD turbines. Full project commissioning is expected in early 2024.
It is due to be France's second large-scale offshore wind farm, following the Saint-Nazaire project, which was commissioned last year.
