New York picks team to build 3GW offshore wind transmission

The New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) has selected the Propel Alternate Solution 5 transmission project to deliver at least 3GW of wind from offshore projects.

The $3.26 billion project will be developed by the New York Power Authority utility and transmission owner and developer New York Transco in a partnership called Propel NY.

Propel Alternate Solution 5 will add three new underground cables connecting Long Island with the rest of the state and a 345 kV transmission backbone across western and central Long Island. The project – designed to help carry power from 3GW of offshore wind to Long Island and, from there, to the rest of the state – must be in service by May 2030.

“The selection of Propel Alternate Solution 5 is a critical step forward as the state works to meet its ambitious climate mandates,” said Rich Dewey, president and CEO of the NYISO.

Propel NY will begin the permitting process with the appropriate governmental agencies and authorities, and the NYISO will enter into development agreements for the project.
