Engie starts powering copper mine with Peru’s largest wind farm

Engie has begun commercial operations at Peru’s largest wind farm.

The 260MW Punta Lomitas facility is located in the southern region of Ica and cost $300 million to build.

It uses 50 of Siemens Gamesa’s SG 5.0-145 turbines and will supply electricity to Anglo American’s Quellaveco copper mine, making it the first in Peru to run 100% on renewable power.

The deal also makes Punta Lomitas the first Peruvian wind farm to be developed as the result of a deal between two private companies.

“As a result, it does not affect power tariffs of end-user bills as it does not require an auction or any kind of subsidy from the state,” said El Mehdi Ben Maalla, CEO of Engie Energía Perú.

Engie is already building a 36.4MW expansion to Punta Lomitas, which should begin commercial operations soon.
