Vestas has agreed to supply 25 V174-9.5 MW turbines to Hibiki Wind Energy, for the 238MW Kitakyushu-Hibikinada project.
It is planned for a site off Kitakyushu city, Fukuoka prefecture.
The order includes supply, installation and long-term service, with commissioning planned for 2025. Once installed, the turbines will become the most powerful operating in Japan.
Japan currently hosts just 170MW of offshore wind capacity, much of which comprises the newly commissioned 144MW Akita Port and Noshiro Port wind farms, where V117-4.0/4.2 turbines have been installed.
This total is tipped to soar to at least 6GW by the end of the decade.
