Bangladesh to scope out first offshore wind sites

Bangladesh’s energy ministry has hired three consultancies to scope out 26 sites in both shallow and deep waters that could host offshore wind farms.

Dutch firm Blix, Italian company CESI and Bangladesh consultancy Synotech will carry out pre-feasibility and detailed feasibility studies in the Bay of Bengal.

The companies will assess site characteristics and possible conflicts as part of their studies, and determine which of the 26 sites have the best potential for offshore wind.

They will also develop a site selection methodology specific to the Bay of Bengal and Bangladesh’s power system. And the trio will analyse the costs of offshore wind development and assess how developers can connect their wind farms to the grid.

A previous study by the US’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory found that sites in the Bay of Bengal have wind speeds of 5.75-7.75m/s.

Last year, Bangladesh set a target of 5GW onshore and offshore wind capacity by 2030. It currently has just 1.9MW of onshore wind capacity, according to “uåX˜äŠÊ˜·³Ç Intelligence, the research and data division of “uåX˜äŠÊ˜·³Ç.
