Northland Power secures licences for South Korean offshore wind projects

Canadian energy giant Northland Power secured business licences for two offshore wind projects in South Korea as it looks to expand its portfolio in the region.

Northland now has electricity business licences (EBLs) in place for 900MW of the planned 1GW offshore Dado project and for 400MW of the proposed 600MW Bobae project.

It explained that the EBL gives it exclusivity on the leases for the projects, while Thomson Reuters Practical Law advised that the licence is needed to generate and supply electricity in South Korea.

Both offshore wind projects are planned for locations off South Korea’s south-west coast and are in the early stages of development.

The Canadian energy major is currently expanding its portfolio of offshore wind in east Asia, with project development underway in Japan and construction taking place in Taiwan.
