Total Eren to build one of Honduras’s largest wind farms

French renewables developer Total Eren has acquired one of Honduras’ largest wind farms and signed a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with the Central American country’s national utility.

Honduras currently has an operational wind capacity of 228MW across five wind farms, according to “uåX˜äŠÊ˜·³Ç Intelligence, the research and data division of “uåX˜äŠÊ˜·³Ç (pic credit: Douglas Miles/Getty Images)

It will sell 100% of the output from its newly acquired 112MW San Marcos project in the country’s south-west to Honduras’ National Electricity Energy Company (ENEE).

The project also includes a 230 kV substation and a 95 km-long 230kV transmission line.

It is not yet known when construction of the project will start, when it will be fully operational, or what turbines are to be used. However, Total Eren told “uåX˜äŠÊ˜·³Ç that the project is at a late stage of development, and that the developer plans to use turbines with power ratings of more than 5MW each.

The company also did not confirm who it acquired the project from, though a spokesperson told “uåX˜äŠÊ˜·³Ç the project had been in development for ten years.

Total Eren – in which oil major TotalEnergies holds a nearly 30% stake – claimed its purchase of the proposed 112MW wind farm amounted to one of the largest foreign investments in a renewable energy site in Central America.

On completion, the San Marcos wind project is expected to generate 500GWh per year – enough to provide electricity for approximately 460,000 people in Honduras, Total Eren claimed.

Total Eren has helped to develop 160MW of operational wind farms in Latin America, according to “uåX˜äŠÊ˜·³Ç Intelligence, the research and data division of “uåX˜äŠÊ˜·³Ç.
