Californian port plans US’s ‘largest offshore wind assembly facility’

California’s Port of Long Beach plans to develop the largest facility for assembling offshore wind turbines in the US. The port near Los Angeles in southern California is the second busiest container port in the country.

The port operator's proposed floating offshore wind staging and integration facility will be known as Pier Wind.

In December, an auction for California offshore wind sites netted $757.1 million in bids. German utility RWE, Danish investment firm Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, Norwegian energy major Equinor, Spain-headquartered Ocean Winds and US-based Invenergy were among those to secure acreage.

And in August, California officials backed a proposal to increase the state’s offshore wind goal to 5GW by 2030 and 25GW by 2045.

For the port, a conceptual assessment for Pier Wind is to be completed in the spring of 2023. The facility would cover 1.6km2 and would create jobs and economic opportunities for communities near the San Pedro Bay port complex.
