Invenergy is working with a state authority to develop a 4GW high-voltage direct current transmission line to carry electricity from renewable energy projects in north-east New Mexico to the rest of the state and to neighbouring states.
The New Mexico Renewable Energy Transmission Authority (RETA) voted to work with the US clean energy developer on the 640km-long high-voltage direct current New Mexico North Path transmission project.
Invenergy is solely responsible for financing the project.
It hopes to start construction in 2025 and deliver first power in 2028.
RETA chairman Bob Busch described a feasibility study for the project as “promising”, and added: “New Mexico has some of the best wind and solar energy potential in the United States, and the New Mexico North Path transmission line represents a critically needed pathway for moving low-cost clean energy to consumers across the state and region who are demanding it.”
The partners believe it could help to unlock about $11 billion investment potential in New Mexico renewables and create 3,500 jobs.
They will still need to secure permitting approval for the project – which can take a long time for transmission lines.
