Aluminium smelter Norsk Hydro is exploring the potential for a new 300MW onshore wind farm to help power its aluminium smelters in western Norway.
It is looking to use power from the project in Høyanger and Sunnfjord municipalities to replace power purchase agreements (PPAs) that are due to expire by 2030, it explained.
Norsk Hydro (35% owner) is considering developing the 300MW Høyanger and Sunnfjord wind farm alongside power producer Eviny (35%) and project developer Zephyr (30%).
The NOK 3-4 billion (€285-380 million) wind farm could use approximately 50 turbines, according to an early project specification.
The trio have now launched a consultation with local municipalities. Under Norway’s revised permitting system, municipalities must show they are willing to accommodate wind farms.
It is unclear whether power from the project would also be sold to other industrial consumers, and when the project might be commissioned.
