Australia has announced it will join the UK, Germany, Japan and the US in the Global Offshore Wind Alliance (GOWA), a group launched in September to increase the global capacity of offshore wind power generation from approximately 60GW to 380GW by 2030.
Currently Australia has no operational offshore wind projects. However, Australian climate change minister, Chris Bowen, said his country’s decision to join GOWA - announced yesterday at the COP27 climate conference - was an “exciting opportunity” for the country in its quest to become a global "renewable energy superpower".
