Three new wind energy projects are to be built in Brazil after winning power purchase agreements in the country’s latest energy tender.
The projects are the 41.6MW Baraúnas IV, 48.5MW Baraúnas XV and 25.2MW AW Sao Joao wind farms. They are required to begin supplying power to distribution firms Cemig and Celpa from 1 January 2027.
Located in Bahia state, Baraúnas IV and XV are owned by Brennand Energia Eólica. AW São João is owned by power firm Alupar and located in Rio Grande do Norte.
The contracts were awarded at prices of BRL 175/MWh ($33/MWH) and BRL 178/MWh, compared with an average price of BRL 237.48/MWh in the tender.
However, wind energy lost out in the tender when it comes to the capacity actually contracted to supply power – winning contracts to supply just 23.5MW annually out of a total of 176.8MW. In turn, 87.3MW was awarded to 12 hydroelectric projects, while 51.8MW was awarded to four solar projects.
