Environmental authorities in Chile have granted permits to two new wind farms.
The environmental commission for the northern region of Antofagasta approved construction of Mainstream Renewable Power’s 192MW Morros wind farm on 5 October.
The project will consist of 24 turbines with power ratings of 8MW and is scheduled to begin operating in 2024.
In southern Chile, the commission for the Los Lagos region has approved Windcraft’s 20.4MW Purranque 2 wind farm, which will consist of three turbines with power ratings up to 6.8MW. Investment is estimated at US$17 million. The Purranque 1 wind farm, which will also have a total capacity of 20.4MW was approved in February.
Chile has now approved nearly 14GW of wind energy capacity – up by about 600MW since December. It has commissioned about 3.8GW.
The latest approval increases the wind energy capacity approved in Chile to almost 14GW, up from 13.4GW last December. So far 3.8GW has begun commercial operations.
