Nordic developer OX2 and Finnish investor Ålandsbanken Fondbolag are moving forward with plans for two offshore wind projects, each set to be around 5GW in capacity, off the coast of the island of Åland, Finland.
The government of the autonomous Åland region recently issued permission to carry out environmental impact assessments (EIAs) and site investigations for the Noatun South and Noatun North offshore wind farms. They will each comprise 360-370 turbines and a grid solution for electricity distribution to Åland, Sweden, Finland and Estonia will be developed.
OX2 said its share of the projects is estimated at about 5GW and, with the EIAs and site work now starting, that capacity is now being officially added to its project development portfolio. The firm is planning more than 8GW of offshore wind in Sweden and says that at the end of the second quarter of the year, its total project development portfolio amounted to 23.86GW, comprising onshore and offshore wind and solar PV.
