UK-based floating wind developer Flotation Energy and Norwegian developer Vårgrønn aims to use offshore wind to electrify and decarbonise North Sea oil and gas installations.
The partners will apply for leases in seabed landlord Crown Estate Scotland’s innovation and targeted oil and gas round.
It is unclear how much capacity they intend to build.
Through the auction – which closes in November – bidders can propose innovation sites to develop knowledge for the scale-up of floating offshore wind, or larger sites to power oil and gas platforms in Scottish waters.
Flotation Energy is developing a 10GW floating wind pipeline off Australia, Ireland, Japan, Taiwan and the UK.
Vårgrønn is an offshore wind developer set up by Italian energy company Eni and Norwegian oil and gas investor HitecVision.
