Saipem and Siemens Energy target floating substation for offshore wind

Offshore contractor Saipem and Siemens Energy are working together on a floating substation for offshore wind farms.

The companies signed a memorandum of understanding to jointly develop a concept design for a 500MW high-voltage alternating current (HVAC) floating electrical substation.

They claim it could have a lighter substructure and be easier to install than one using fixed-bottom foundations.

The semi-submersible structure would be designed to operate in extreme environments, they added.

It would also be designed for industrialisation so that it can be adapted to fabrication and assembly infrastructure worldwide.

The companies have planned further technical workshops on the concept. They do not yet have a target date for when the concept design might be finished.
