DP Energy targets Australian offshore wind

Irish renewable energy developer DP Energy is exploring five sites off the south-east coast of Australia for potential offshore wind development.

It has started development and feasibility works at five sites off the coast of Warrnambool in western Victoria, Wonthaggi and Port Albert in the Gippsland Region, and Wollongong and Newcastle areas in New South Wales.

It is unclear how much capacity DP Energy envisages these sites could support.

The announcement follows the federal government mapping out six regions across Australia with the potential for offshore wind development, with Gippsland in Victoria the most advanced.

It is as-yet unclear how much offshore wind capacity Australia’s recently identified zones could support, or how projects will eventually be compensated for their electricity production.
