Massachusetts has committed to a goal of 5.6GW of offshore wind by 2030.
State governor Charlie Baker signed into law on August 11 comprehensive clean energy legislation.
The legislation will reform the New England state’s offshore wind procurement process, drive job creation and economic development, and make new investments that will strengthen the domestic supply chain, said the Business Network for Offshore Wind (BNOW).
The state has already contracted nearly 2.5 GW of offshore wind. That includes the nation’s first commercial-scale offshore wind project, the 800MW Vineyard Wind 1, which is under construction.
John Begala, vice president of federal and state policy at BNOW said of the new law: “The benefits of offshore wind are as powerful as the turbines themselves – generating clean, reliable, and affordable energy for tens of millions of homes across our country, creating 77,000 well-paying jobs this decade, and revitalizing the shipbuilding and domestic manufacturing industries.”
