Renewables investor Octopus Energy Generation and Dutch sub-megawatt turbine manufacturer EWT plan to repower up to 1,000 existing onshore wind turbines in the UK.
They intend to start upgrading the turbines – which are located across England, Scotland and Wales – to be more powerful and technologically developed this autumn. They plan to fit some of the turbines with larger blades and replace others completely.
By 2030, the new turbines will have power ratings ranging from 250kw to 1MW.
The companies are also looking at repowering projects in other European countries.
Zoisa North-Bond, CEO of Octopus Energy Generation, said: “There’s a huge untapped opportunity to repower wind turbines that communities have already hosted for many years.”
The companies have not confirmed the turbines’ current range of power ratings, current combined capacity or expected future combined capacity.
