Swedish battery maker Northvolt and Finnish pulp and paper firm Stora Enso are working together to develop batteries using lignin-based hard carbon produced with wood from Nordic forests in their batteries
The partners aim to develop the world’s first industrialised battery featuring anodes sourced entirely from European raw materials.
Lignin is a plant-derived polymer found in the cell walls of dry-land plants. It helps to bind trees together, and can account for up to 30% of a tree.
Northvolt and Stora Enso explained that wood-based anodes can help to lower the carbon footprint and cost of batteries.
