Brazil’s Omega Energia to build its first US wind farm

Brazil’s Omega Energia is to build its first wind farm in the US in partnership with unnamed local investors, the company announced.

Omega Energia has concentrated its wind farm development efforts in Brazil prior to its acquisition of projects in Texas

Construction of the 265.5MW Goodnight I wind farm in Texas is expected to cost $410-420 million. The bulk of financing will be provided by tax equity (45%), with a bank loan providing 12% and equity accounting for the remainder.

The wind farm could be expanded to 531MW by the end of 2023 – with the construction of the 265.5MW Goodnight II  project – Omega stated.

Definitive contracts have been signed with several suppliers including Vestas which will provide 59 of its V136-4.5MW turbine and be responsible for the operations and maintenance of the project for the next 30 years.

Investment boost

Omega announced on 27 June it had agreed a $500 million investment deal with an unnamed US infrastructure asset manager.

The investor plans to invest up to $500 million in Omega and has already assigned $192 million to the Brazilian developer.

Omega plans to reveal the identity of the investor once it closes the deal for the investment. It expects this to happen soon.

On 27 June, Omega also announced that investment firm Actis plans to boost its stake in the company to 20%.

Actis had already acquired a 12.4% stake in Omega through a block share purchase.

Having surpassed 10%, this triggered a shareholder agreement with the other controlling shareholders, investment funds Tarpon Gestora de Recursos Lta and Lamdba3 Fundo do Investimento em Acoes Investimento no Exterior, whereby Omega will announce the appointment of two Actis directors to the board.

Actis then plans to launch an offer for Omega shares to lift its stake up to 20%, probably in the fourth quarter.
