Wind farm approvals in Eastern Finland have plummeted, with Finnish Defence Forces rejecting projects for security reasons following Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
Projects close to strategic areas, such as Finland's land border with Russia, or with turbines over 50m tall require military approval. Reports by the Finnish Broadcasting Company (Yle) and Eurative say 80% of projects proposed in the last ten years in Eastern Finland have been approved.
This year, most applications have been rejected with the military suggesting turbines in Kymenlaakso and South and North Karelia – all in the east – negatively affect the operation of air surveillance radars.
