Innovative ‘collared’ foundations installed at RWE offshore wind farm

Contractor Deme Offshore has installed three ‘collared monopiles’ at RWE’s 342MW Kaskasi offshore wind farm in the German North Sea.

The ‘collared monopiles’ are based on an RWE patent and have been installed at seabed level, with the space between the collar and the foundation filled with grout.

RWE explained that the collars will provide additional support for lateral loading, increase the bearing capacity and improve the structural integrity of the entire foundation.

CEO for offshore wind at RWE Renewables Sven Utermöhlen added that the collared monopile will help to increase stability in difficult ground.

RWE will carry out tests to verify that the collar improves the structural behaviour in comparison with standard monopiles.
