Irish permitting body An Bord Pleanála has granted approval for SSE Renewables to develop the onshore grid infrastructure necessary to connect the 800MW second phase of its Arklow Bank offshore wind farm.
Approval paves the way for SSE Renewables to build a 220kV substation in County Wicklow, Ireland and the associated connection from the new substation to the existing national transmission network.
It also covers the underground cable route and associated infrastructure connecting substation to the landfall point where it will meet the export cables from the wind farm 13km offshore.
First power is expected in 2028 ahead of full commissioning the following year.
Surveying activities are due to be completed by the end of August 2022 subject to weather.
SSE Renewables still has to apply for the project’s offshore infrastructure including offshore wind turbines, offshore substation platforms, and subsea cables.
