Norwegian investor Aker Horizons and compatriot renewables developer Statkraft plan to jointly explore opportunities for green hydrogen and ammonia production driven by wind and solar generation in India and Brazil.
They plan to sell the green fuels to the countries’ hard-to-abate steel and fertiliser industries.
Aker Clean Hydrogen, a portfolio company of Aker Horizons, will work on the partnership on its parent company’s behalf.
"Both India and Brazil are large consumers of hydrogen, have supportive governmental policies and benefit from world-class renewable energy resources, which offers significant opportunities for green hydrogen and ammonia production,” said Knut Nyborg, CEO of Aker Clean Hydrogen.
The partners plan to work with German wind and solar PV developer Sowitec in Bahia, Brazil.
Their first project in the country will be a large-scale hybrid project combining renewable power generation with hydrogen and ammonia production for the local fertiliser industry. They expect to begin commercial operations by 2027.
