EDF Renewables, a subsidiary of French energy firm EDF, has submitted plans to build a 416MW wind farm in northern Chile.
The €569 million Wayra wind project will comprise 52 turbines with capacity of up to 8MW each. It will also include 19MW of solar photovoltaic (PV) panels and a 300MWh lithium-ion battery storage facility, according to the Environmental Impact Study for the project.
The project will be built on the Taltal wind reserve in Antofagasta, on state land set aside for renewables development.
Last year, EDF Renewables was among six companies to win concessions to use the land, where a total of 1.7GW of wind, solar PV, and storage capacity is planned by 2030. The other companies are AES Corp, Enel Green Power, Grenergy, Ibereólica and Statkraft.
“This means a new and important step in EDF Renewables' commitment to collaborate with Chile's energy transition, through the construction and development of new renewable projects that are correctly integrated into their human and environmental environments,” said Jean-Christophe Puech, CEO of EDF Renewables Chile.
In Chile, EDF also owns a 50% stake in the Cabo Leones I wind farm in the neighbouring region of Atacama. The project is undergoing a 60MW expansion, with the installation of 12 Siemens Gamesa 5.0-145 turbines, to take total capacity to 175MW.
